I update my lg gt540 to 2.1 eclair, but I could not root as many others have explained. Then I tried programs for rooting:
Universal Androot did not work
SuperOneClick It hanged at “rageagainst the cage” (I ran it on Linux)
z4root WORKS

Actually, Z4 makes it possible to run root apps (eg. Titanium backup). I have been able to do that before. But, I can’t get root access throug adb, which I could before.

Well, I have NOT been able to run root apps when I had rooted gt540 with 1.6. But, thanks to z4root, I can now on 2.1 eclaire, and having installed Superuser and Super manager, I can remove ALL the apps I like. E.g. Sims3.

if i root my lg optimus gt540 will i b able to upgrade using the lg tool as im on o2 pay and go and it wont let me update from 1.6 to 2.1

I backed up my files, went to the dialer called, it rang a while then whent to a message stating: the number (or code) is incorrect or out of service (tried many time & Quadruple checked the #). I saw NO opption to ‘module test, sability test or anything on or in the phone or dialer menus either. I just can’t seem to figure it out

if i root my phone using z4 will i be able to delete some factory apps on it?

I also had problems rooting my phone. Z4 didnt work so im thinking about installing donut, rooting then upgrading back to eclair. but im hesitant because i dont know if my phone will still be unlocked after all is done. also them mofos at LG took down the usb drivers for the GT540. anybody know where else to get them?
