Rooting a phone grants you the ability to modify system files, install forbidden applications, change icons and, in a few words, do anything you want.

As soon as you gain full access to your LG Optimus GT540, you can unlock it to use any SIM card you want and even enjoy tethering options. LG Android Phones

The good news is that finally someone found a way to root the LG Optimus GT540, and was so kindly to share his thoughts. LG Phone Problem and Solution

Please backup your data before rooting your LG Optimus GT540 because they all will be erased.

How to Root the LG Optimus GT540 Steps:

  1. Turn on the device and click the icon to open the phone dialer
  2. Enter the code ‘3845#*540#’
  3. Select the option ‘Module Test’, then ‘Stability Test’ then ‘Enable Root Permission’
  4. You will now be prompted for a password – enter :SWIFT::GT540:
  5. A toast message will briefly appear saying ‘OK’ – your root access is now enabled!
  6. Reboot your device, and now when you connect via ADB, you’ll see you have a root prompt (#).

You can now download and install ChainsDD’s excellent Superuser app from here (I used the su-2.1-cd-unsecure version). Have a good day!

I update my lg gt540 to 2.1 eclair, but I could not root as many others have explained. Then I tried programs for rooting:
Universal Androot did not work
SuperOneClick It hanged at “rageagainst the cage” (I ran it on Linux)
z4root WORKS

Actually, Z4 makes it possible to run root apps (eg. Titanium backup). I have been able to do that before. But, I can’t get root access throug adb, which I could before.

I also found this, but I haven’t tried it. It looks like you have adb root access as well:

Well, I have NOT been able to run root apps when I had rooted gt540 with 1.6. But, thanks to z4root, I can now on 2.1 eclaire, and having installed Superuser and Super manager, I can remove ALL the apps I like. E.g. Sims3.
