LG now add support for WiFi communication to it’s G Watch R Android Wear in a new software upgrade going out today. You can see the “Wi-Fi settings” option and a listing of Wi-Fi hotspots in action on the LG G Watch R in the image below. This new update brings Wi-Fi support that means the watch will be able to carry on getting notifications, even if it is not connected to your phone via Bluetooth.

The software upgrade is being sent out OTA, aside from the aforementioned addition of WiFi communication we aren’t treated to much. We’re sure there are many under-the-hood changes that users won’t really notice, but whatever they are the company didn’t feel it necessary to list them.

If you have yet to see the update, be patient. Interested users can check for the latest OTA update notification on their LG G Watch R via Settings > Software Update.

After seeing so many people get hung up on complicated guides to manually update the LG G Watch R to 5.0.1, I thought I’d write the simple guide during my next bout of insomnia. So, no sleep tonight for me means a new guide for you. It’s very simple, with only four steps: 1) download the OTA update, 2) flash the 5.0.1 recovery, 3) prepare to sideload, and 4) sideload.

Here’s how to sideload the update without ROOT.

  1. Enter Bootloader (swipe top left-bottom right as soon as the LG logo pops up on boot)
  2. Unlock bootloader (fastboot oem unlock) and boot the watch normally once
  3. Turn off and re-enter bootloader
  4. Flash 5.0.1 Stock Recovery (fastboot flash recovery filename.img)
  5. Enter recovery and ADB sideload the update (tap the android, select install update from ADB and enter adb sideload
  6. Done!

After some experimentation I cleaned up these instructions a little bit and confirmed this method works for me. Here’s what I did, real easy:

How to flash / unroot LG G Watch R

  1. Download Stock Boot, Recovery and System.img
  2. Replace boot.img, recovery.img and system.img with their respective filenames
  3. Attach phone to computer, open terminal and issue:
    • fastboot flash boot boot.img
    • fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
    • fastboot flash system system.img
  4. Reboot and enjoy

Disclaimer: I am not responsible if you use this and brick your device or if your device blows up, implodes, catches on fire or it starts WWIII. Use at your own risk.
